For ice removal, most products containing calcium chloride can be used without damage to the deck or porch surface. These products may leave a white residue which can be cleaned using the cleaning guidelines in the previous pages.

I’m wondering if I should apply the DEFY Composite Deck Sealer onto the boards, both sides, before installing. Mold can occur on almost any material, including wood decking and uncapped composite decking. In some cases, excessive or repetitive stress, exposure to extreme heat or UV radiation, or production issues can lead composite decking to flake and disintegrate.

If you were going to use our DEFY Extreme Clear, we would recommend removing the Sherwin Williams product first. With that being said, solid color stains are difficult to remove. Unless you want to sand the deck down to bare wood, or use something like a paint stripper, you may want to stick with a solid color stain. This one might throw you a little, but it’s important. If you apply too much sealer to the wood , wipe off the excess. We don’t think twice about wiping off excess stain when we are staining interior wood.

You would also want to apply a mold inhibitor to retard future growth. The porous nature of decking aids the process, as mold spores will settle into these pores and root. Once moisture, heat, and a food supply are introduced, the spores will bloom and create dark spots on the boards. Eventually this will spread across the deck. If the boards are not thoroughly cleaned of mold and its rooting, the mold will return -- especially if it is prevalent in the environment around the deck.

Calcium-chloride is an example of a safe and effective compound you can use for melting ice on your decking. Sodium chloride rock salt should not be used for ice melting. The granules may leave permanent unsightly marks on the surface of your decking.

I am sad for all who have the same problems-but please be persistant and keep bugging Trex, your contractor, or store you bought it from-it may help in the end. I installed a Trex deck and screened porch in 2003. Have had problems with it crowning, cracking at the ends of the boards and, of course, constant mold spots. I have tried Corte Clean and Concrobium Mold Eraser with limited success.

How do I keep mold off my composite decking

I am going to power wash it, to remove all of the unwanted elements. There is one place where the deck was damaged and a little chunk is missing, now there is mold growing in that little area. Michele, until the deck starts absorbing water, you may just have to clean it every so often. Composite decks made in the last 5-10 years may not need sealing for a long time.

Products are non-toxic, non-flammable, non-staining , completely biodegradable and safe to use. Product is water-based and may require a second application after rain or other weather conditions. Over a period of time, the effect of static will dissipate naturally on the decking surface. While this is not common, static electricity can occur on walking surfaces in dry climates or in areas where dry winds and dust-borne particles lay on the decking surfaces. If you’ve got a wood deck with mold and deck mildew problems, the most likely cause is neglect. Chances are that you have not treated the deck for a long time.

While there are plenty of such products on the market, stick to what the composite decking manufacturer has recommended to avoid causing any damage. Sweeping and cleaning with soapy water will get rid of debris and most surface dirt and stains.

It is the best solution for seasonal cleanup, everyday spills, or stubborn spots. On average, one gallon diluted with one part cleaner to three parts water will clean approximately 1,000 square feet of surface area.

I'm experimenting with a few products and techniques and could use all the help out there. I still have perpetual maintenance with the Timbertech deck, and still regret building with it due to mold problems. I do not have trouble with rot or splinters, though, as some other composite owners have complained. If I can find the "magic" cleaner and protector at an economical price, I would not be so angry about this, still. I have been working with TT material a long time. The Floorizon (T&G) material will stand up and be beautiful if you make sure you install it correctly. Read the Installation Manual on proper installation requirements.

This is an entire weekend job with lots of scrubbing and the power washer. Never mind that we are in drought ridden California and I'm wasting precious water to clean an inferior product. Around June or July when I see there will be several dry days in a row, I use the very expensive stuff. It takes one day of cleaning, another day to dry, and then I apply the Restorer to make the deck more waterproof. This seems to prolong the time between reappearance of mold black spots.

  • While composite decking is known for being a step up from wood decking, not all boards are created equal.
  • And while no one can guarantee a deck will never develop mold, a capped composite board does provide significant advantages over wood and uncapped products.
  • Any exposed wood particles in a board’s core or cap weaken its defense from mold, mildew, and moisture damage.
  • This unique blend of ingredients helps the composite decking resist staining and fading, as well as inhibits mold growth.
  • Capped polymer and 4-sided capped composite decking provide homeowners with a great alternative to traditional composite and wood decks that are susceptible to mold and mildew.
  • Composite decking is made up of a blend of wood particles and plastic materials to form a deck board, thensomeare capped with a synthetic material to help keep moisture out.

If you plan on building your deck close to the ground or enclose it, check first. I have found a product that is eco friendly and does not have any chlorine bleach in it or added to it.

West and North-facing areas are most commonly affected because they spend so much time in the shade. The problem is less common on south-facing surfaces. On the North Shore, which tends to be more moist than Tsawwassen or White Rock, you may have to apply new paint or stain every year. In other places you may only need to do so every two years. Composite decks require very little maintenance, and even enjoy a limited 25-year residential warranty.
